Singer, Teacher, Mother, Artist

“I feel that Portia has a natural gift for facilitating spaces of wonder. I remember sitting by the river in Shoreham and drawing and singing with the children and the other adults and it was so magical. We were invited to respond to the sounds around us, the vibrations of wind, water, children’s voices; and I felt like singing and drawing were a continuum. Portia is so balanced in the way she offers guidance and structures and gives enough space for exploration. I felt held and set free.” – Anca. Artist, mother, workshop participant
As well as being a singer, performer and sound artist for 25 years, I have been teaching students of all levels of experience one-to-one for 15 years. I also run singing circles, vocal workshops and a group vocal ecology course, and lead creative walks and make voice maps. I collaborate with artists, choreographers and painters. I am a visiting voice lecturer for 2nd-year music degree students at Falmouth University in Cornwall since 2015. We explore words, sounds and meaning, and the voice and electronics. I work with undergraduate and postgraduate music and art students from Goldsmiths and Chelsea Art Colleges on their final shows. My own ongoing therapeutic journey and my journey as a mother and a passionate lover of nature infuses the spirit and body of my creative and teaching practices.
